human requiem
After numerous guest performances around the world, Jochen Sandig's staged realisation of Johannes Brahms' "German Requiem" with the Rundfunkchor Berlin can be experienced again where it premiered in 2012: at the Radialsystem.
Under the direction of chief conductor Gijs Leenaars and together with a team from the company Sasha Waltz & Guests, the Rundfunkchor Berlin is choreographically realising the Brahms Requiem.
The separation between stage and auditorium is cancelled, the audience does not sit frontally in front of the sound, but stands in the middle of it - text, body, space and sound are directly connected with each other.
The production has already been shown in New York, Hong Kong, Athens, Brussels, Amsterdam, Granada and Adelaide, among others.
In 2016, the "human requiem" was voted on the New York Times' annual best list in the category The Best Classical Music and received the Classical:NEXT Innovation Award in the same year.
Brahms' Requiem is not a mass for the dead, which is why the text does not follow the Catholic liturgy. It is intended to comfort the living. Its theme is the realisation of our transience, the significance of death, mourning, but also overcoming it. The gaze remains turned towards life. And that is why a "spatial" realisation of precisely this work is so coherent in terms of content.
The message of the requiem becomes an immediate, personal experience in the community of singers and listeners.
