In the Global Destination Sustainability Index (GDS-Index), Berlin ranks fourth among the participating cities, achieving its best result to date. The index is considered the most important international sustainability ranking for the tourism and events industry and recognises sustainability efforts. The assessment takes into account 76 criteria in four areas: urban environmental strategy and infrastructure, social sustainability, visitor economy engagement (hotels, venues, restaurants) and destination management strategies and initiatives.
The commitment to sustainability of Berlin's tourism and events industry played a key role in this ranking. Three quarters of all Berlin hotels with more than 75 rooms are now certified as sustainable. This represents an increase of 41 per cent since 2022. 13 of the 16 largest conference and exhibition venues in Berlin now have sustainability certification. These are impressive figures on an international scale. For guests and business travellers, this means an even better selection of sustainable accommodation for their stay in Berlin.
However, the city's service providers and event locations are far from finished in their pursuit of further sustainable measures and initiatives. Time and again, providers impress with new innovative ideas on how to make events even more resource-efficient and climate-friendly – without compromising on experience, taste and fun.
