Gerhard Richter: 100 Works for Berlin

  • Highlights
Gerhard Richter has given 100 works to the Nationalgalerie as a long-term permanent loan. From April 1, 2023 the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin for the first time will present these works from several creative phases of the artist in their entirety.

Works by Gerhard Richter from several creative phases

The exhibited works by Gerhard Richter include a large group of works from the impressive group of overpainted photographs.

On display are individual works by Gerhard Richter such as "Occupied House" (1989), but also significant glass and mirror works such as "Mirror Gray" (1991) and also series of paintings from the late work such as "4,900 Colors" (2007), "Strip" (2013) or abstract works from recent years.

Cycle "Birkenau" by Gerhard Richter permanently in Berlin

The central work of the exhibition is the cycle "Birkenau" (2014), consisting of four large-scale abstract paintings. The cycle is the result of Gerhard Richter's intensive examination of the Holocaust and its representability.
The basis of the Birkenau cycle are four photographs from the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp, which Gerhard Richter transferred to the four canvases and then gradually painted over. With each layer of paint, the painted photographic template disappeared a little more until it was finally no longer visible.
The work also includes a large, four-part mirror placed opposite the four Birkenau paintings, creating another layer of reflection.

It is intended that Gerhard Richter's works will remain permanently on the grounds of the Kulturforum Berlin after the completion of the Museum of the 20th Century, which is currently under construction right next to the Neue Nationalgalerie.
