IBB Business Team GmbH has analysed the Sustainable Event Scorecards of 35 companies that received funding from the Berlin Congress Fund for Sustainable Meetings. The findings provide insights into the practical measures event organisers are taking to make their meetings and congresses more sustainable.
The most widely adopted measure among event organisers is the use of reusable crockery, cutlery and packaging. This helps reduce the number of single-use products at their events.
Digital solutions for attendee management rank second. Online registration, digital event information and documents replace printed materials.
Two measures share third place: the use of reusable furniture and equipment, and carefully planning food quantities according to demand. Wherever possible, surplus food is redistributed or donated to prevent food waste.
The Sustainable Event Scorecard helps event organisers systematically integrate sustainability measures into their event planning. It covers a total of 13 areas for action, including mobility, accommodation, catering, event technology and staffing.
The findings of the IBB analysis provide practical examples of how event organisers can implement sustainability measures across different aspects of their events.
Through the Berlin Congress Fund, the State of Berlin provides financial support for meetings and congresses that meet the relevant funding criteria. The Sustainable Event Scorecard serves as the basis for documenting and evaluating the sustainability measures implemented.
