Hotspot for optics, photonics and innovation

Berlin and the greater Brandenburg area are among the world's leading centres for optics and photonics. With a long tradition and an exceptionally high density of innovation, Berlin is a magnet for companies, research institutions and event organisers from all over the world.

With a long tradition dating back to the 19th century, a significant and highly innovative industry has developed. Today, nearly 400 technology companies and more than 30 university and non-university research institutions are working in the metropolitan region on forward-looking solutions for a connected and resilient society. From optical technologies and microsystems technology to quantum technologies, an ecosystem is emerging here that connects business, science and society.

    Centre for key technologies

The Berlin Photonics and Optics Cluster brings together expertise from optical sensor technology, communications optics, medical technology and other high-tech fields. These technologies play a key role in the digital transformation – for example, through precise laser measurement technology, intelligent microchips and innovative light sources in diagnostics.

The industry's success is based on close cooperation between science and industry. Berlin is consistently focusing on technology transfer in optics in order to quickly turn innovations into marketable products.

A good example of this is the Adlershof Technology Park, where renowned institutes such as the Max Born Institute for Nonlinear Optics and Short Pulse Spectroscopy and the Ferdinand Braun Institute for High Frequency Technology work on marketable solutions. Close cooperation with start-ups and industrial companies ensures rapid technology transfer.

In addition, the Berlin Photonics and Optics Network is one of the largest of its kind in Germany. It brings together around 115 members – from global players to optics start-ups – and is coordinated by the Brandenburg Economic Development Agency and Berlin Partner. The aim is to promote exchange, exploit synergies and strengthen the region's competitiveness.

A location for business events and innovation

Berlin-Brandenburg is not only a technology centre – it is also an ideal location for specialist events. Events such as the Photonics Days Berlin-Brandenburg and LASER World of PHOTONICS underline the international visibility of the cluster. They offer a platform for knowledge exchange, networking and the presentation of the latest developments. For organisers of conferences, workshops or innovation events related to photonics, sensor technology and microsystems technology, the cluster offers a powerful infrastructure, an excellent specialist audience and a dynamic culture of innovation.

The cluster specifically promotes knowledge and technology transfer through various networking platforms. Berlin is therefore an ideal location for specialist conferences, workshops or innovation events related to optics and photonics. Organisers benefit from modern infrastructure, international accessibility and a highly qualified specialist audience.
