European Football Championship 2024 in Berlin: Sports, Art & Culture
Summary of the blog post
On July 14 at 9 p.m., the time has come: Berlin's Olympic Stadium will become the center of the European football nations. Berlin is expecting 71,000 spectators from all over the world, including superstars such as Ronaldo, Lewandowski and Gündoğan, to celebrate the sports and culture of football – together, at the grand finals of the European Championships.
UEFA EURO 2024: another summer fairytale in Berlin
European football fever has taken over and Germany is looking forward to hosting another summer fairytale. Just like in 2006, football fans from all over the world will once again unite in Berlin - on the pitch, in the stadiums, and throughout the whole city. This tournament’s slogan "United by Football. United in the heart of Europe" puts diversity, inclusion and sustainability in the centre. Berlin will set the scene for shared moments of passion and intercultural solidarity in sports.
Pure action awaits our capital: with six thrilling matches and a public program of events that will make fans’ hearts beat faster! Moritz van Dülmen, Managing Director of Kulturprojekte Berlin GmbH, said in an interview with rbb: "We're rolling out the green pitch: The Straße des 17. Juni (the main axis cutting across Eastern and Western Berlin and historic showplace of the civic uprising in 1953) will become a playing field for everyone!" Live broadcasts of the matches can be watched on XXL screens, and the 24,000 square metre fan mile invites audiences to kick goals through the Brandenburg Gate. The city’s most popular site will symbolically be turned into the largest football goal in Europe.

Colourful programme: Berlin as a unique venue for sports and cultural events
The opening match for Berlin on June 15 will begin with a top-class encounter. In the preliminary round matches on June 21 and 25, Austria and the Netherlands will meet the play-off winners of their groups. They will battle for a place in a round of 16 on June 29 and the quarter-finals on July 7. For the grand finals on July 14, around 71,000 spectators will pour into the Olympic Stadium Berlin, when the superstars of the UEFA EURO 2024 play for the ultimate victory – and to hopefully watch live how the German football dream of 2014 repeats itself under new coach Julian Nagelsmann.
But even on non-match days, Berlin will live the spirit of community and solidarity of sports. As part of the #Berlinkickt initiative, the Football and Culture Foundation is presenting an impressive arts and culture programme. The campaign promotes projects and organisations that support human rights, environmental and climate protection, inclusion, freedom, diversity, and participation in the context of UEFA EURO 2024 in Berlin.
One of these projects is "Neighbourhood Kick EURO 2024" by the buntkicktgut initiative. With 250,000 euros, the non-profit association supports sporting and youth cultural activities, including artistic street football projects. Those projects enable children and young adults from a wide range of backgrounds to actively participate in the UEFA EURO 2024.
Besides the influence of sports on youth and urban culture, the campaign addresses a wide range of other socio-cultural aspects in the relationship between football, history, society, and the environment. The what matters projects GmbH, for example, is financing an exhibition on the topic of “Sports. The Masses. Power. Soccer under National Socialism” at the Berlin Sports Museum. Further support goes to the "Green Your Game" initiative of Weltwirtschaft, Ökologie und Entwicklung e.V. and many more projects.

Berlin promotes sustainable commitment: Initiative “Sustainable EURO 2024”
This championship’s special focus on sustainability projects in the areas of ecology, social affairs, economy, and governance is particularly noteworthy. The “Sustainable EURO 2024” programme is supported by the city of Berlin with a total investment of one million euros. With that funding, for instance, a “Sustainability Home” and a “House of Pride” will be erected in the Fan Zone during the tournament. There the international queer community can meet and celebrate overcoming barriers, an idea that is key to sports.
To ensure that the UEFA EURO 2024 in Berlin provides not only sporting highlights, but also contributes to the sustainable development of our city, projects like the above-mentioned can be funded between 75 to 100 percent (with a maximum of 50,000 euros). Accordingly, opportunities to engage with and educate people about sustainability shall be grown beyond the context of the tournament. Institutions and academies as such by the German Foundation for Commitment and Volunteering showcase how it can be done. From the organisation of a school sports week to a workshop series for amateur football clubs, or soccer projects with female refugees: all initiatives are welcome to apply for funding.
Barrier-free for the kick-off: New designs for Olympic Stadium and S-Bahn trains
Further investments into sustainability are made in terms of infrastructure improvements and barrier-free accessibility in the context of the upgrades to the Olympic Stadium. In total, the city has provided almost 27 million euros to increase energy efficiency through the use of LED lighting and heat recovery systems. Measures are also being taken to improve accessibility - both in the physical and digital infrastructure of the stadium.

To ensure that the fun doesn't just start on the pitch, but already upon arrival, new e-charging stations are available around the Olympic Stadium site. Peter Buchner, Managing Director of S-Bahn Berlin, also promises: “As usual, we will arrange additional train transportation to bring fans from Europe and all over the world to the six matches in the Olympic Stadium. Visitors won’t have to worry about parking. In cooperation with UEFA, the Association of German Transport Companies (VDV) and the local public transport system (ÖPNV), we will ensure a smooth and environmentally friendly journey to and from the stadium.”
Another special incentive: until the end of the championships on July 14, 2024, a colourful train in a unique UEFA design will transport passengers on the S-Bahn network between Berlin and Brandenburg. That way our city welcomes all fans who come to experience the spectacle live in Berlin.
