Berlin’s commitment to sustainability

Berlin thinks green – not just on paper, but throughout the cityscape. Sustainable management is firmly embedded in the city’s development strategy. But what exactly makes Berlin so sustainable? The city does a great deal to maintain its green character: car-free zones, a dense network of cycle paths and urban gardening projects make sustainability a tangible part of everyday life in Berlin.

The idea that Berlin is a grey, concrete metropolis is quickly dispelled: instead of concrete, you’re welcomed by countless parks, green rooftops and open community gardens. Berlin is one of the greenest cities in Europe. No matter where you are, the next park is never far away.

The same goes for the nearest organic café, vegan bistro or restaurant serving plant-based dishes – all full of flavour and authenticity. Berlin’s culinary scene is diverse and international, with lovingly prepared vegan menus that prove plant-based cuisine can be truly delicious.

4th place: Berlin among the most sustainable metropolises worldwide

In the Global Destination Sustainability Index (GDSI), Berlin ranks fourth among the participating cities, achieving its best result to date. The index is considered the most important international sustainability ranking for the tourism and events industry and recognises sustainability efforts. The assessment takes into account 76 criteria in four areas: urban environmental strategy and infrastructure, social sustainability, visitor economy engagement (hotels, venues, restaurants) and destination management strategies and initiatives.

The commitment to sustainability of Berlin's tourism and events industry played a key role in this ranking. Three quarters of all Berlin hotels with more than 75 rooms are now certified as sustainable. This represents an increase of 41 per cent since 2022. 13 of the 16 largest conference and exhibition venues in Berlin now have sustainability certification. These are impressive figures on an international scale. For guests and business travellers, this means an even better selection of sustainable accommodation for their stay in Berlin.

However, the city's service providers and event locations are far from finished in their pursuit of further sustainable measures and initiatives. Time and again, providers impress with new innovative ideas on how to make events even more resource-efficient and climate-friendly – without compromising on experience, taste and fun.

Our vision: #1 among the most sustainable cities

We at the Berlin Convention Office are committed to transforming Berlin into the most sustainable event destination in the world – and to serving as a pioneer for other MICE locations. But how can we achieve this? Since 2020, we’ve been a member of the Global Destination Sustainability Movement (GDSM), an international initiative and alliance of destinations working together to develop sustainable strategies for tourism and congress development. Our membership also means we take part in the Global Destination Sustainability Index – the annual sustainability ranking for destinations. It’s a deliberate step towards transparency, and a powerful motivator for us to keep driving our vision forward.
