Secessions. Klimt, Stuck, Liebermann
At the end of the 19th century, the emergence of the Secession movements meant nothing less than a revolution in the system of art. In Vienna, the dawn of modernism was directly associated with Gustav Klimt, in Munich with Franz von Stuck, and in Berlin with Max Liebermann.
In the German-speaking countries, the Secessions were founded in Munich in 1892, in Vienna in 1897, and finally in Berlin in 1899, at close intervals and with many overlapping personalities.
The traditional structures of state subsidies and exhibition systems with juries based on the criteria of the royal art academies were rejected and the artists strove for freedom.
Despite the diversity of the artistic approaches of this avant-garde, the goal was the liveliness and diversity of artistic forms of expression with a decidedly international orientation.
The exhibition includes around 200 paintings, graphic works and sculptures by relevant artists.
Thanks to the cooperation with the Wien Museum, Klimt's oeuvre in particular, with 60 works, will be the focus of the exhibition.
The female artists of the Secessions form a further focus with works from Dora Hitz to Käthe Kollwitz.
The exhibition is made possible by the Friends of the National Gallery with support from White & Case LLP.
A special exhibition of the Nationalgalerie - Staatliche Museen zu Berlin in cooperation with the Wien Museum.
