Rico Puhlmann – Berlin / New York
Rico Puhlmann (1934-1996) was one of the most renowned fashion photographers internationally. He shaped the fashion image of his time.
Starting out as a sought-after child actor in film, Puhlmann entered the fashion magazine industry as an illustrator before creating cover motifs and editorials for the world's highest-circulation fashion journals, first in Berlin and then in New York.
A fatal plane crash brought his career to an abrupt end.
His photographs document central themes of fashion history over four decades: fashion trends such as the legendary Berlin chic of the post-war period or the New York sports and streetwear of the 1970s and the changing dress codes that came with it, the development of the modeling profession's self-image, a changing image of women and men, the spread of beauty ideals that did not represent diversity, as well as the actors and selection mechanisms that played a leading role in the inclusion of the images in high-circulation magazines and thus in the collective memory.
