Berlin Science Week: Interactive Events at Berlin Destination of Sciences
Berlin Science Week 2023
Summary of the blog post
10 days dedicated to science, more than 200 physical, digital and hybrid events, renowned international scientists and speakers from over 180 organisations, and over 35,000 visitors from 140 nations: Berlin Science Week
From the 1st to 10th of November 2023, the Berlin Science Week has been more successful than ever in bringing together researchers, academics, practitioners, and interested parties to deal with current challenges and debates shaping sciences and our society. 30 different interactive formats ranged from panel discussions over workshops, fair grounds and shows, to VR installations, and fostered interdisciplinary exploration, exchange, reflection, and innovation in the city of Berlin.
Berlin: City of Sciences
Home of Max Planck and more than 10 famous noble prize winners, headquarter of renowned institutions, and global centre for scientific work and exchange – Berlin’s expertise in science is strong. More than 830 educational institutions, 500 start-ups, and 170 interactive museums across the city provide plenty of opportunities for old and for young to experiment, discuss, and learn playfully.
Wissenschaftsstandort Berlin
Berlin believes that research, technologies, and science are key to drive sustainable changes and future innovation. However, only when they are open to all and subject of critical exchange. With the Berlin Science Week, the city has created a programme that makes science attractive and accessible. Its mission is to educate about where we come from and to stir curiosity and visionary thinking about the futures we are heading for.

According to the motto “Dare to Know:Our Narratives, Our Futures“, the Berlin Science Week therefore promoted the academic principles of scientific work, provided a stage for valid research insights, and invited citizens and experts altogether to engage in dialogues about the developments which shape our private and professional lives.
Berlin Science Week: Innovation through Interaction
For the fourth time in a row, the festival organisers collaborated with the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin(Museum of Natural Sciences) to create a CAMPUS of science. The versatile programme of over 200 event highlights featured free multisensory exhibitions, open panel discussions, tiny galleries, Science Slams, and over 20 further interactive event formats. All of them fostered the cross-disciplinary exchange among the participants and among the natural, social, cognitive, and economic sciences.
Following that idea, the festival was extended to a second centralized location, the ART & SCIENCE FORUM, which provided a special platform to explore the correlations between creative practices and scientific breakthroughs - a successful premier in 2023. As reflected in the claim “Dare to Know: Creative Science, Precise Art“, this format in collaboration with the Holzmarkt 25 was dedicated to discussing topics like artificial intelligence (AI) and human creativity, and stage of the final party.
From Breakfast to Break Throughs
As location for the core programme, the Museum of Natural Sciences provided the perfect setting for a total of 70 events and engagement sessions, supported by a range of sponsors and official partners, including the Berlin initiative “Brain City” and the Senate Department for Science, Health, and Care.
The CAMPUS day of the 3rd of November was opened with an exclusive networking breakfast, organised by the visitBerlin Berlin Convention Office. Around 60 guest - from physicians and medics over anthropologists to engineers - were invited to share their experiences with and ideas about the effective organisation of scientific congresses. As all of them were top-of-their-class scientists from different disciplines and from all over Germany, the morning initiated a vivid exchange about the purpose, formats, and development potentials of such B2B meetings.
The welcoming event was followed by a presentation byFelix Rundel, co-founder of Futurehain, and consultant with expertise in creative meeting design and strategic program conceptualisation. His interactive session with the title “Presence and Purpose: How do we create new formats for business meetings in sciences” was moderated by Manuel Wrobel (Head of Business Development at the visitBerlin Berlin Convention Office).
After a brief introduction into the neuro-scientific and experience-proven foundations of his recommendations, he validated his theses in real time: by turning the audience into active participants. The attendees listened, discussed, shared, and visualised their ideas. Hence, they experienced first-hand how an effective, constructive B2B meeting in the scientific sector could be like.
Travel in Times of Climate Change
First and foremost, the TourismHub, an interactive E-Learning platform that features free training series for tourism and events planners, opened the framework program, addressing a particularly pressing topic:
Christian Tänzler, press spokesman at visitBerlin, welcomed Stefan Gössling from the Institute of Cultural Geography on stage. Stefan Gössling teaches as professor of Tourism at Linnaeus University, School of Business and Economics in Kalmar (Sweden) and as Postdoc at the Freiburg University (Germany). As such, he brings over 20 years of experience in the field of tourism and its interrelations with climate. He delivered a presentation on “Tourism in the Times of Climate Change” in which he shared insights into some of his most recent studies. He focused on
