Just "get out": Don't miss the opportunity to escape your everyday life in these dreary times.
The Friedrich-Wilhelm-Stadt is unjustly overshadowed by the better-known Spandauer Vorstadt, the western part of which it was separated from in 1828. There was already the Charité, built in 1709 as a plague house, and the magnificent private gardens along the Spree. The old Berlin district not only has a lot to tell, from veterinary and human medicine, theater and science history or GDR times. Of particular interest are the numerous, often rather unknown architectural monuments of the small quarter between the Spree and Invalidenstrasse, Humboldthafen and Friedrichstrasse. The north was dominated by the military and is now dominated by the new, powerful BND headquarters.
