    My personal wall experience

"25 years ago, I was a young girl at the age of six living in Berlin. Our little apartment was situated in East Berlin, in a backyard house with no proper bathroom and the shared toilet located outside in the hallway between two floors. My mother was an only parent looking after me while working full time. I remember once, having went to the little supermarket around the corner, a glass of gherkins slipped through my hands. I kneeled down, when I looked back up behind me, I could see the massive, grey Berlin Wall wrapped in barbed wire and guarded by men wearing heavy dark coats. Finally on November 9th 1989, I was at the Brandenburg Gate with thousands of other people celebrating the fall of the Berlin Wall."

    My personal wall experience

"To be honest as the wall came down 25 years ago I was a happy media executive forging a  successful career working in London for one of the UK’s largest publishing companies and being, frankly, more pre-occupied with what company car I was driving and to which top-notch restaurant I would take my clients to next! Little did I know that that would all change and that the falling of the wall would have a dramatic and life changing effect on me a few years later."

"It all began in a disco in Brighton on a hot summers evening in ’94 when I met a lovely German girl – a meeting that was to change my life forever, just like, for Pulp fans, the song “something changed”. Three happy years on we left London together and moved to her home town in Germany, Chemnitz, a deeply East German City and the start of a new adventure. Whilst it did not prove to be the love of my life we both moved independently but together to Berlin a few years later where another extraordinary twist of fate brought my future wife and me together whilst I was working for a historical event location in the City – again through pure coincidence!"

"Nearly ten years on and we are very happily married with a beautiful six year old daughter. None of the joy and happiness that I have encountered over the last 20 years would have been possible had the Wall not fallen and the picture attached sums up perfectly the results of a happy Anglo – (East) German relationship much better than any piece of history can!"

    My personal wall experience

"When the wall came down I was a 15 year old school boy living in Hanover. Of course I saw the pictures on TV showing funny dressed happy people crossing the border in small similar looking cars... The parents of a school mate took him and me to Berlin for a long weekend trip witch was the first time for me to be able to stand on that ugly wall. A very clever move by those parents and I am so happy that we did it. In the meanwhile I am living in Berlin for 17 years - in all these years the city has changed a lot. I am in a relationship  with my girlfriend from former East Berlin, living together, and our boy is getting three this summer."

    My personal wall experience

"When the wall came down, I was actually flying to London for a school exchange on the evening of November 9, 1989. When the plane left Berlin the wall was still standing, when we landed in London, the wall was open. When we arrived at my exchange parents house we watched television and the news until late at night. I spoke with my grandmother on the phone, and she hasn´t realized until I told her. And actually my whole family missed that evening and the chaotic first days, as my parents have left a few days earlier for a round trip to Russia."

    My personal wall experience

"Flash back to December 23rd 1992…. An icy cold wind whips through Berlin… two young adults emerge from a train station that, from the perspective of a New York ExPat, seems like a rudimentary hole in the ground. Little signage, almost like a provisional station. They step out onto a wide expanse of grassy space, in the distance all around are buildings and lights but here there is nothing, a virtual no man’s land. This was Potsamer Platz in 1992. The place where the wall had been, two tiered, with guard dogs, watchtowers and landmines running in between the two expanses of Wall. Now “just a field”, the subway station only recently reopened after having been reinforced shut with steel in 1961. They transverse the field and walk through the desolate streets of the former East Berlin, down a back alley staircase into the basement of an unoccupied building."

"The techno party is in full force, the heat from the movement of bodies meets them as they open the door. Here they will stay until the early hours of morning, making their way again in the cold, across that field… At that moment in time, neither could have ever imagined that this field would be the future home to the Sony Center, DaimlerChrysler, Deutsche Bahn, a new Grand Hyatt, Ritz Carlton and so much more. Flash forward to 2014, the techno club in the abandoned building has long since dissappeared and relocated, the Potsdamer Platz Station is once again one of Berlin's largest and most modern stations, and the streets are lively and filled with shops and restaurants, bustling with residents and visitors from throughout the globe. A world class metropole has reemerged."

Whether here on business or taking a break in this cosmopolitan city, enjoy excellent dining options and warm hospitality throughout your stay.

    My personal wall experience

"I was six when the wall came down between East Germany and West Germany. Me and my family lived in the east part on the outskirts of Berlin, thankfully a peaceful place surrounded by lakes. It was my dad’s birthday when we celebrated with family, friends and political co-workers of my dad. Even they did not know what will happen. At one point my uncle came and mentioned that the wall came down. No one believed him so we turned on the Big Box called TV to see it in the news. Suddenly everyone left in shock and tears, some tears of joy some of shock. My cousins first thinking was “what happens with the school” and my one was “more shiny shoes”"

"I do not remember much of the years, but this occasion is clearly in my mind. Two days later we went with our Card board box called Trabi to visit the rest of the family in West Berlin which was a relief for all of us. Major part of our family lived up north close to the border which was by the Baltic Sea which made it even more difficult to see them then the ones in the west part. The five-hour drive north with numerous unwanted stops cause the car heated up so much and no seatbelts in the back of the car made it an adventurous journey. I guess these little things made you feel a “bit” free. Now 25 years later we can discover the world go everywhere, but back then we were the happiest kids just going to Berlin for a day to see the Alexanderplatz with its Clock, the Gendarmenmarkt or Palace of the Republic which got demolished now. As kids we always put our nose on windows of the luxury hotels and hoped to stay in one of them one day. Not knowing that this will be my workplace one day. I cannot judge if it was good or bad, but as a kid I have to say it was an exciting time."

    My personal wall experience

"The 9th November 1989 was my 9th birthday and we were celebrating with the whole family near Dresden, in the East of Germany. My mother asked me to get my grandpa who was watching the news in his house next door. When I arrived, I saw grandpa crying and when I asked him what happened, he just said that I should go and get the rest of the family very quick. So I did and everyone was overwhelmed with the news and couldn´t believe that this was happening. I kept my birthday in mind for those emotions and am thankful to be growing up in an united Germany as I wouldn`t want to miss all those great places that we are able to see. And the heart of it all is Berlin! A city in its renaissance, full of life and young history that we can all relate to."

I like to say: "New York in the '80s." "London at the height of Britpop." "Paris in the '30s." "Berlin now."

    My personal wall experience

"When the wall came down I was nine years old and I was living next to Munich. I do not recall exactly the 9th of November, 1989 however my great-aunt was living during that time in Western Berlin and my family visited her frequently. I do remember the first time I was standing next to the wall close to Brandenburg Gate and everybody picked a piece from the wall. I also took some pieces of the wall with me, but somebody told me that they are toxic so I buried the pieces wrapped in a plastic bag in our garden. Well now my parents have somewhere in their garden a historical souvenir from Berlin."

    My personal wall experience

"I heard from the fall of the wall just the following day. I thought there were some sort of riots in Berlin, but more in that kind, that they broadcasted some events of former times. I did not really care so much about it, went to school and was wondering, why there were almost no other pupils, neither teachers. Just the other day, we decided to make a first visit to West Berlin. We took a public train as the streets to Berlin were completely crowded. Everybody was happy and my uncle mentioned that this was the first time ever that he saw empty supermarkets in West Berlin as people from East Berlin bought everything."

    My personal wall experience

"I am a born-and-bred Berliner! Thinking back to my childhood days, it still impresses me to see how many opportunities and chances rose throughout the city due to the fall of the Wall! When I was a child, my mum often took me to the Gendarmenmarkt Square to listen to the beautiful chimes of the French cathedral. At that time, I would have never imagined that 25 years later I would be literally working next door in one of Berlin’s most precious and luxurious hotels, the Regent Berlin: A hotel where stars like Madonna and George Clooney stayed and that bears the same name as the hotel where Pretty Woman was filmed. Today, Berlin is, to me, a city full of life, art, history and culture but it is also a city that still has many quiet and green areas. It is a great place to live and to enjoy – if you have not been here yet you’ll better make sure to come soon to experience it yourself!"

    My personal wall experience

"Although 25 years ago I was still a child, I remember the day of the fall of the Berlin Wall quite well. During this time we lived in a small village in West Germany.  I was at home with my mother and my sister, when my dad who is a police officer came home from work in his police car. He opened the door and shouted full of excitement that obviously the Berlin Wall is about to fall. So we rushed to the TV to watch the latest news from Berlin and the border. Although, I was still too young to understand the whole meaning of the happenings I got fully touched by the joy and excitement of my parents."

"I was born and raised in southern Germany, just 5 kms away from the border to East-Germany. There was even a small village called Moedlareuth, which was divided between east and west by the wall. This is why the Americans called it “Little Berlin”. It was an abandoned, calm region there. This changed completely after the 9th November 1989 – traffic jams everywhere, supermarkets opened on Sundays and closed due to congestion! A crazy time, and therefore I wanted to come to Berlin because here was – and is – the place where everything is possible!"

    My personal wall experience

"When the Berlin Wall fell in 1989, I was living and studying in Stuttgart. I heard about the news on TV and was instantly overwhelmed by this. People had been waiting for this for years and although it had been somehow foreseeable that something like this must and will happen, it still came as a surprise. As I was living further away, I did not experience it on-site, but I was moved by the stories from people who were able to see their friends and family members again after such a long time. I was just happy and content about the fall of the Berlin Wall and the fact that Germany was reunited."
