Johann Gottfried Schadow. Touching forms

  • Highlights
Johann Gottfried Schadow (1764-1850), known as the "father of the Berlin school of sculpture," played a key role in the development of sculpture in Germany and the world of ideas of European classicism.

His depiction of the princesses Luise and Friederike of Prussia and the figure of the Quadriga on the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin from 1793 have been defining visualizations of the era since their creation until today.

The Alte Nationalgalerie preserves the world's most comprehensive collection of sculptural works by Schadow and was the starting point for the last major Schadow retrospective nearly 30 years ago. Since then, many new insights into the artist, his work, but also his workshop and his working methods have become known - insights that not least the large-scale restoration project of the plaster original of the "Princess Group" from the Alte Nationalgalerie have brought to light and which are now presented publicly for the first time in the exhibition.
