Solange Knowles. Bridge-s
Bridge-s is the latest project by GRAMMY Award-winning musician and visual artist Solange Knowles (b. 1986), which she is developing with choreographer duo Gerard & Kelly for the Neue Nationalgalerie.
At the heart of the project is a multi-part performance that will take place both in the Glass Hall and on the outdoor terrace spaces of the museum.
Local dancers* and musicians* will be cast across Germany for the production. The work deals with the idea of transformation and will be performed at the transitional moments of sunrise and sunset in interaction with the architecture. Based on the sensual image of a bridge, Bridge-s sees itself as a plea for more social diversity.
This not only concerns the diversity of the participating dancers and musicians, but is also expressed in the selection of musical styles and cultural references.
Gerard & Kelly have been working since 2016 on a series of performance and video works exploring the relationship between the body and architecture, with a particular interest in modernist icons and the often repressed social experiments associated with them. The performance, which is strongly related to the specific spatiality of the Mies Building, is thus linked to a critical reflection on strict Bauhaus modernism and its narratives.
