Sibylle Bergemann. Photographs 1966-2010

  • Highlights
The exhibition at the Berlinische Galerie is the first posthumous museum retrospective in the world to feature the career of Sibylle Bergemann. It approaches her unique visual universe on several narrative levels.

Sibylle Bergemann (1941–2010) was one of the bestknown German photographers of the late 20th century.

Over more than four decades, the Berlin-based photographer created an extraordinary oeuvre of city, fashion and portrait photographs as well as essayistic reportages.

Recurring motifs are the city, women and, time and again, dogs. Wanderlust is an important driving force behind her photographic practice worldwide: Dakar, Moscow, New York and Paris were among her destinations.

With a selection of over 200 photographs, 30 of them previously unpublished, the exhibition takes a retrospective and personal look at the work of Sibylle Bergemann.

Six chapters - "Invisible Observer", "Berlin", "Women", "Leningrad, Moscow, Paris, New York ", "The World in Color" and "Back in Berlin" - lead thematically and largely chronologically through the oeuvre created between 1966 and 2010. Another chapter, "Lebensorte," presents not only her photographs but also images by Arno Fischer, Ute Mahler, Roger Melis, and Michael Weidt, which provide insight into Bergemann's private and social spaces. Here, the connection to photographer friends in East Berlin and to international colleagues becomes apparent

The exhibition at the Berlinische Galerie is the first museum retrospective in the world to feature the career of Sibylle Bergemann. It approaches her unique visual universe on several narrative levels. Over 200 photographs have been chosen from the museum’s own collection and from the photographer’s estate. Selected motifs from her early work will be on show for the first time.

The exhibition has been organised in partnership with the Sibylle Bergemann Estate and funded by the Friends of the Berlinische Galerie.
