art:berlin - Bundesstraße 1 - Berlin's high-rise axis

The discussion about the value of inner-city high-rise construction flares up again and again. While City West around Bahnhof Zoo is now being planned as a second centre for vertical densification, we look at the historic traffic axis between Alexanderplatz and Rathaus Steglitz, where a multitude of striking and innovative tall buildings have long shaped the Berlin cityscape. No other street boasts so many unique solitaires of modern architecture from different eras, by renowned architects such as Hermann Henselmann, Peter Behrens, Renzo Piano, Emil Fahrenkamp, Bruno Paul or Sigrid Kressmann-Zschach. Even if some legendary buildings were never built here or have been preserved in modified form today, the building activity for the years 1928 to 2000 remains exemplary. In the north-south running traffic flow, attempts were made again and again to find a representative mixture for a metropolitan infrastructure, so that many an architectural pearl can be found for new residential demands, growing trade and self-confident administration in a new urban meaning.
