To mark the 100th anniversary of the Treaty of Versailles, the Berlin artist Mia Florentine Weiss is transforming the nave of St Nicholas' Church into a universal "Way of the Cross".
This installation presents a cross resting on a mound of earth (which visitors can walk on) as a reflection on the consequences of a war where German soldiers went to fight "for God" as well as a reflection on the effects of the subsequent "peace". The artist uses this material as a way to make connections with current debates about the unity of Europe.
The physical experience of this installation confronts visitors with questions about their own cultural identity. At the same time, it generates direct encounters and new perspectives.
The artist collected the soil on which the cross lies from 47 European countries. With the help of the digital platform #LOVEEUROPE, you can follow her journey from anywhere in the world and send soil from your own place as a sign of commitment to European integration.
