Handelsblatt Energy Summit 2019
The signs have changed in energy and climate policy: After a phase in which the state was the key player in the energy system transformation and the industry wanted to slow down the change, it is now exactly the other way round.
Political measures are only starting slowly, protracted discussions ensure that the power for a genuine new beginning is lacking. Germany is still lagging behind in climate protection. The expansion of the grid is not progressing. An agreement on the special tenders for four gigawatts of onshore wind energy and four gigawatts of photovoltaics, as promised by the coalition agreement, is now planned, with ample delay, until the end of October. And whether and what results can still be expected from the "Structural Change Commission" by the end of this year, is quite questionable after the recent quarrels about possible preliminary stipulations. Moreover, instead of focusing on competition and digitisation, politicians are sticking to concepts in need of overhaul, such as the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) and complicated electricity price regulation. All these developments are holding back the further development of the industry at a time when Europe is coming under greater geopolitical pressure. State symbolic politics do not help - they hinder. But there is also a positive trend: technology and changing customer needs are increasingly replacing politics as the main engine of change. Thanks to data-driven business models, companies today can bring demand and supply together in ways never seen before. Now it is up to the suppliers to act. The Handelsblatt Energy Summit will therefore focus on the opportunities arising from developments in technologies and customer needs. We want to discuss the political aspect from the perspective of how regulatory barriers can be dismantled in a meaningful and socially acceptable way so that even more dynamism can be created in the industry. We look forward to exciting and controversial discussions with you at the Handelsblatt Energy Summit.
