Underground Architecture Revisited
International conference on subway architecture in the 2nd half of the 20th century.
Traffic structures, especially modern ones, set visible signs in cities and often become places of identification for their users. But with the changing function, with modernization pushes for car, bus and train, these small incunabula are threatened with great changes today - up to total loss.
Against this backdrop, ICOMOS Deutschland, the Berlin State Monuments Office and the Kerberos Initiative invite visitors to the Berlinische Galerie from 20 to 23 February 2019. The international conference "Underground Architecture" will examine the architectural design of underground stations in the second half of the 20th century. In detail, the organizers are interested in European comparisons, in the exchange between the preservation of historical monuments and monument research, between the creators, operators and users of modern underground lines and stations. Proposals for topics are still being sought, e.g. on the following focal points: Monument values and significance; construction, material and colour; preservation and modernisation; mediation and reception; actors and networks.
The programme will follow shortly.
