Conference Rector maris: Sextus Pompeius und das Meer
The fact that the sea played a role both in the military as well as in the representation of Sextus Pompeius may well be unquestionable, but the concrete function of these seas and the seas themselves for Sextus and the manner in which this reference has been literally used remains to discuss.
The conference will look at this complex of topics from an interdisciplinary (philological, historical, archaeological, numismatic, literary-scientific) perspective, thus not only dealing with the civil war but also the imperial and, in particular, Augustian perspective on Sextus, as well as the modern reception at Shakespeare, Light.
The central questions of the conference will be: How are the maritime references to the representation of the sextus to be assessed? How is his military action to be understood, and how was Sextus perceived during the bellum Siculum in Rome? How was the union of Sextus and the sea worked in historiography and poetry? And how is the figure of the sextus in relation to the transition to the principle?
